Every time people spend time trying to figure out what Trump is thinking it just drives home what an absolute dumbass he is, perhaps the biggest dumbass on the planet at the moment.

90% enjoyed, 10% annoyed.

First off, really enjoyed the discussion with Marc. I don't know much about Florida politics so I'd never really considered why Desantis has been so successful there when I only really saw what happened with his presidential campaign. I am also always entertained by the discussions of Iran and trying to read anything rational into Trump's policy whims. Marc gave me a giggle with the Rorschach thing.

I thought the segment on using AI for journalism was also very reasonable, but I have some worries. I think Megan is using AI responsibly. People on the internet are being reactionary and stupid as usual. But she also demonstrated towards the end part of my frustration, when she took 10 seconds to generate a "not bad" article on why breakfast is racist. (I know she's kidding and it was probably quite bad)

It used to be that I could start reading something and pretty quickly tell whether somebody had put some thought into it. It was annoying to slog through all the minimum effort clickbait, but the things that had some originality and gumption stood out.

Now it takes me so much more effort to do that. I can't really get a sense from the grammar or the spelling anymore, it's just some key phrases that AI loves which can give it away.

So if I want to sift through the bad content, now I'm left with three options.

1. Waste an absolute ton of my time reading everything

2. Only get content from people I already trust

3. Use AI to summarize, or even to sift through the content for me

You could argue #3 is what has been happening for years. That's the algorithm after all. Except now it's even more pervasive, and it's insanely more expensive to compete with those companies.

Just as an example, Google search has been getting consistently worse over the years. It's why LLMs felt like a breath of fresh air for a while. Finally, I can find what I'm actually looking for. But LLMs are becoming gamed as well now, and that's before the AI companies try to make them profitable by injecting ads.

#2 has its issues because it means I won't see much outside my bubble. Nothing new here, the internet has always been this way. I just think it will become worse.

And #1 is just an exhausting and frustrating experience.

In some ways this careless rush towards AI has actually been a good thing, because it caused me to really examine my bubble and my process for evaluating trustworthiness. It's hard. I don't think you can solve it with computers or algorithms. In some ways it's pushing me back towards smaller and closer communities, which seems healthy.

It's just going to be a very frustrating few years while things settle down. And we'll have to deal with a lot of very bad decisions made and implemented very quickly.

Sorry for the novel that's not very novel. I'm tuned out of my social media now so this debate has probably already been done to death. I just never bothered making a blog to rant on.
